Since July 2004, every shipping company must have a person in charge of shipping security (Company security officer). His duties should be in accordance to the ISPS CODE.
All ships above 500 gross and all passenger ships with international destinations, should follow the ISPS CODE. Failing to do that, a shiping company faces problems with the verifications and the certifications. Entrance delays to the ports and registration to "black lists" are also two additional, problems.
VIP PROTECTION GROUP is one of the few companies in Greece and even in Europe which has the right to teach the ISPS code that exclusively concerns the security of ships and harbour facilities to the personnel of the Shipping Companies.
The duties of the company security officer are the following:
Certify that every ship under his authority has a security assessment.
Certify that a security plan has been establish.
Certify that every security plan serves and covers all needs and demands of the ship.
Checking the internal security procedures
Taking care the verification and certification of every ship, provided from internatinal organizations/authorities.
Be responsible for security training of the staff.
The security plan of every ship is based on the security assessment, which in order to be accomplished, it needs experience and skills (e.g. risk analysis, threat analysis). These skills cannot be tought in 4 days period. The cost to prepare a security assessment begins from 1500$ and goes up to 2500$. At least one weeks work is needed in order to complete the security assessment.
